Cathedral of the Holy Cross (second) is dedicated.

[9/28] Architect: Charles Bulfinch. It is located at today’s 214 Devonshire Street. The first Catholic Church built in Boston, its construction is supported by donations from a number of distinguished Protestants, including John Adams. Francis Matignon is the first pastor. The church is designated a cathedral in 1808. The last Mass is celebrated on September 16, 1860 and the building is demolished in 1868 [1862-Orwig]. Masses are then held in the Melodeon Theatre and in a former Unitarian church, until a new cathedral (third) is built on Washington Street in 1875.*
